One of the things we miss living here in California is being with our cousins. Luckily, we've had fun with the Dittbrenner cousins TWICE since we've lived here since their mom works for an airline, so they fly for free. They only came for one night and one day this time for Martin Luther King's birthday and Amy and Wayne came too. It was nice to see them and talk to them Sunday night. Then we got up early and headed to the Jelly Belly factory.
That's a fun place to take kids. You get a tour of the factory and see how they make Jelly-Bellys. They even have a free sample bar that you can taste as many as you' d like (you may have to get back in line a few times). You wear little paper hats and everything! Amy loved it- because Amy loves tours. But kids love it because you get a small bag of jelly bellies for FREE. Actually the whole tour is free too, and it's always nice to have a free activity your kids will enjoy!
We got into our cars in the rain, but our drive into San Francisco was CRAZY! I was going 10 MPH on the freeway at one point because I couldn't see ahead of me. It was like I was driving under a waterfall! Luckily we drove out of it and as we approached the city it cleared up. We decided to walk around on the pier while it wasn't raining. Amy's kids have begun collecting patches from different National Parks for their Jr. Ranger program. Who knew that the SF pier had an area with ships and shipping museum that was a part of the National Parks?! Well Amy did, so we got the little booklets and the kids found all the things in the area, and got a little patch and badge. We then got our sandwiches and walked down to see the Sea Lions on Pier 39. Most of them had gone to Monteray (I'm still not sure why) but it was fun to see them. The kids stopped to watch the "Gold" and "Silver" men do their street performing. They are spray painted from head to foot. They hold really still so the kids think they are statues, and then they'll do these robotic type movements. When they held out the cans for donations, cute Dixie put a nickle in. The Gold guy dumped it back into her hand. We're still not sure if he didn't want to take a kids nickle, or if he was insulted by it's low value! We also ran into the balloon man, who did balloons for the kids for free (although Amy gave him $5 since I had no money and Erik was buying sour dough bread).
Lastly, we went to the Exploratorium. It's like a Children's Museum on steroids! We'd been there in July with Char and so I didn't take the camera in again but if any of you come to visit us we'd love to go there with you!
